This winning design was the culmination of an international competition created by Evergrande Development in Beijing, China. The site borders one of Beijing’s major waterways and views from the units must be oriented to it. The plan design splays the units into a curved “V” shape to achieve this goal. In doing so, a tall open atrium is created along the south-facing knife edge. This atrium becomes a source of airflow in the hot summers and a natural heat column for heating the units in the frigid winters.
