Texas Tech English and Philosophy Building*

Lubbock, Texas

The Texas Tech Board of Regents wanted a replacement facility for the existing English building on campus. The planning of the structure must conform to the existing layout of the campus and enhance those spaces created between buildings. The Board charged that this plan and the ensuing design should seek to bring back the spirit of the original 12 buildings on campus as designed and planned by William Ward Watkins, in the Plateresque Renaissance style. The resulting building is placed squarely at the intersection of two open courts creating two new quadrangles and a new central axis to the existing arena. The College of Education building is set across a new quad to reflect the English building. The buildings are double loaded C-shaped forms facing each other. The English building’s entry is noted by a landmark tower aligning to an existing diagonal promenade. The facility contains classrooms, large lecture halls and faculty offices.
